The Path to U.S. Naturalization

Naturalization refers to the process where a foreign citizen or national is granted U.S. citizenship after he or she meets the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Deciding to become a U.S. citizen is one of the most important decisions a person will every make. If you decide to apply for naturalization, you will be demonstrating a life-long commitment to the United States by showing your loyalty to the Constitution and the American people.

When you become naturalized, you are agreeing to accept all the responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen. You are agreeing to support the United States, its Constitution and the state and federal laws. • Be a permanent resident for at least 5 years and have met all other eligibility requirements
• Have been a permanent resident for 3 years or longer and have met all of the eligibility requirements to file as a spouse of a U.S. citizen
• Have qualifying service in the U.S. armed services and met all other eligibility requirements

Your child may qualify for naturalization if you are a U.S. citizen and your child was born outside of the U.S., and your child is currently living outside of the U.S. and all other eligibility requirements have been met. You may also be eligible to qualify for naturalization if you do not qualify through the naturalization paths mentioned previously.

What are the benefits of U.S. citizenship?

There are many benefits associated with U.S. citizenship, such as the right to vote in federal elections, bring family members to the U.S., obtain automatic U.S. citizenship for children born abroad and the right to travel with a U.S. passport.
